West Ham’s ‘next big thing’ to boost QPR promotion push
Once heralded as the next big thing at Manchester United, Ravel Morrison is set to move on once again, with QPR poised to take the talented midfielder on loan until the end of the season.
Morrison’s well-documented off-field issues ensured he never fulfilled his potential at Old Trafford and despite shining on occasion at Upton Park, the 21-year-old is set to drop down to the Championship after falling out of favour with Irons boss Sam Allardyce.
Described as one of the most naturally gifted players to emerge from the United academy, Morrison is notoriously difficult to work with but could flourish under the tutelage of Harry Redknapp.
The Hoops manager’s arm-round-the-shoulder style of management is likely to suit the 21-year-old’s laid-back approach to the game and with the deal being delayed until next week, Redknapp clearly believes Morrison can fire his side into the Premier league.
A loan is expected to be confirmed next Friday – 93 days before the Championship playoff final – and while Redknapp will strive for automatic promotion – a feat priced at 8/15 with Ladbrokes – the former West Ham, Tottenham and Portsmouth manager is taking no chances.
The maximum loan length for players at this stage of the season is 93 days so should Rangers finish in the playoff places at odds of 4/5, then Morrison will be there to help their cause.
QPR were not the only London side vying for Morrison’s services, with Rene Meulentseen – who worked with the midfielder at United – attempting to reunite with the youngster at Fulham.
However, it looks like Loftus Road is the next stop for the 2011 FA Youth Cup winner, and an extended run in the side could go some way to seeing the player fulfil his potential.
Redknapp tried and ultimately failed to get the best out of the similarly-mercurial Adel Taarabt but could have pulled off a masterstroke in signing Morrison.
