Tottenham join long queue of admirers of Ajax youngster
Published:Jan Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Edgar Davids and Rafael van der Vaart are all examples of successful Tottenham raids on the Ajax production line, so you can forgive them for returning to feed from the conveyor belt of talent for another sitting.
The latest gem attracting the attention of the north London club’s transfer magpies is attacking midfielder Davy Klaassen.
The 20-year-old is enjoying a modicum of success in the Ajax first team this season and as a result the Lilywhites have tagged their name onto the bottom of a list suitors that includes Aston Villa, Manchester United and Chelsea.
Having spent an amount that rates close to war chest levels on attacking players last summer, it seems strange that Tottenham would launch a bid to replenish that area of the field.
However, at the beginnings of his footballing career – he’s made just 16 first team appearances since turning pro with the Dutch giants in 2011 – signing Klaassen would one with the future firmly in mind.
That’s not to say the Hilversum native wouldn’t be able to make a contribution in Spurs’ first team straight away. His hugely impressive return of seven goals in 10 league starts this season proves his merit as a player for now, although a future attacking midfield partnership of Klaassen and 21-year-old Eriksen will surely set Spurs fans into drooling wonder.
If Spurs succeed in their 12/5-rated bid for Champions League football next season then Klaassen, who has five career appearances in the competition, would add depth to Spurs’ squad as they battle on four fronts.
It’s likely the midfielder won’t be available on the cheap, though, with the Dutch league-leaders issuing a hands-off statement via their sporting director Marc Overmars.
And with so many parties queuing up to take the youngster off Ajax’s hands, a bidding war could be just what the former Arsenal winger is expecting.
