Super Studger has to be the value pick for England top scorer

Published:

Wayne Rooney may be considered England’ greatest goal-threat, but given his prolific form ever since swapping Stamford Bridge for Anfield, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge can eclipse the Manchester United man at the 2014 World Cup for the Three Lions.

In the battle to become England’s top scorer at football’s greatest jamboree in the summer, Ladbrokes currently have Rooney as the 12/5 favourite ahead of Sturridge at 10/3.

Danny Welbeck’s impressive goal-scoring form in recent showings for his country has the United man installed at 7/1, while seasoned midfield pair of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are next at 9/1 and 10/1 respectively.

He may only have notched twice in nine England appearances as yet, but Studger’s current goal-scoring form in a red shirt makes him stand head-and-shoulders above the competition.

In notching the equaliser in the Reds’ vital away win at Fulham, with a trademark slick finish, the former Chelsea and Manchester City striker became the first Liverpool player in the Premier League era to score in seven consecutive league games.

This now makes Studger one of the most prolific front men on the planet and there isn’t anyone in the Three Lions set-up more reliable to polish off a chance on this evidence.

Still only 24, Sturridge has electric pace, matched by silky skills and with his club captain Steven Gerrard most likely to be supplying the ammo from midfield, everything looks perfectly placed for him to excel in Brazil.

Furthermore, one half of Liverpool’s famed SAS partnership with Luis Suarez, managed to cut down his strike partner’s lead in the race to become the Premier League top scorer to seven.

Although Suarez, who has now gone three games without a goal is still deemed the heavy 1/14 favourite, at his current rate Sturridges’ odds of 10/1 to supersede him hold a certain attraction.
