Both Sir Bobby’s records in major jeopardy as Rooney signs deal

| 22.02.2014

By pledging the remaining best years of his playing career to Manchester United Wayne Rooney has given himself every chance of fulfilling his dream of surpassing the great Sir Bobby Chalrton’s goal-scoring records for club and country.

The 28-year-old United striker, who is now set to be at Old Trafford until 2018, is only 42 goals shy of Sir Bobby’s all-time Man United scoring record of 249.

With rumours spreading like wildfire earlier this season that Rooney would be pushing the Old Trafford ejector button in favour of a move to Chelsea, breaking the club record had looked in serious doubt.

However, like most observers, bookmakers Ladbrokes now see Rooney reeling in Charlton’s long-held marker as somewhat elementary by deeming it long-odds on at 1/4.

Wazza signed for the Red Devils as a bright-eyed 18-year-old wonder kid and has since gone on to chalk up 208 goals in 430 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Meanwhile, the firm offer 5/1 that the Liverpudlian reaches a mammoth 300 United goals during his time at the club.

The record which could be broken first, though, is Charlton’s all-time England total of 49 where Rooney has so far amassed 38 goals from 88 appearances.

Needing a dozen more Three Lions goals Ladbrokes also see it as extremely likely Rooney will reach the half-century for his country, as they label it a 1/3 chance.

Rooney has a fine chance to add to his burgeoning tally at this summer’s World Cup in Brazil where he is the 12/5 market leader to return home as England’s top scorer at the tournament.
