Nottingham ground front-runner to host Froch v Groves re-match
Published:Nottingham Forest’s City Ground has emerged as the front runner to stage Carl Froch’s much anticipated rematch with George Groves.
The Nottingham-born super middleweight world champion, who won the first bout after a controversial ninth round stoppage, took to Twitter to proclaim: “Just got off the phone with @EddieHearn & the waiting is nearly over. City Ground is now the front runner. @Official_NFFC let’s do this.”
It is no secret that Froch, a life-long Forest supporter, has always dreamed of fighting in front of his home-town fans at the City Ground and if his claims turn out to be true his chances of another victory will be strengthened.
The Cobra is the 8/13 favourite for a second victory over the Londoner, while Groves is 11/8 to become world champion.
Groves stunned the boxing world by flooring the champion in the first round of their initial fight in Manchester and continued to dominate the judge’s scorecards before referee Howard Foster contentiously stopped the fight in Froch’s favour after a barrage of punches from the Nottingham fighter.
The pair, who have never seen eye-to-eye, continued their war of words after the fight and their verbal sparring has been a constant sideshow in what is building up to be one of the biggest fights in British boxing history.
And despite Froch’s claims the bout will take place in Robin Hood country, Groves has hit back claiming his opponents tweet is a hoax.
Saint George tweeted: “Before you all book your trains to Nottingham because the Sheriff has tweeted – I very much doubt King John would send us all there!”
Manchester United’s Old Trafford and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium were thought to be the frontrunners to host the much anticipated rematch on May 31st.
