Newcastle striker not the right man to fill Arsenal vacancy
Loic Remy may have made a bit of a splash at Newcastle and scored a decent amount of goals in his career to date, but the Frenchman is not the stellar name Arsenal require to turn them into trophy-hoarders.
Given that QPR’s club record signing was only ever on a season-long loan at St James’ Park it was only a matter of time before other Premier League clubs began clamouring for his signature this summer.
However, as good a player as Remy is, he’s surely not the answer to Arsenal’s shortage of strikers at the Emirates.
Arsenal are currently entering the business-end of the season with the familiar feeling of looming failure about to strike on every front because of the club’s decision to play double jeopardy in either last summer’s or the January transfer market.
As a result the Gunners best hope of a trophy remains the FA Cup, where they are deemed the 11/4 second-favourites to lift it after drawing Everton at home in the quarters.
Meanwhile, they are the big 7/2 outsiders to qualify at Bayern Munich’s expense in the Champions League and have slipped to 13/2 third favourites to claim the Premier League title.
A striker of 27-year-old Remy’s ilk – who has only reached the 15 league-goal mark once in his career to date back in the 2010/11 campaign with Marseille – will not turn Arsenal into favourites for some of these trophies next season.
Remy is undoubtedly gifted and with 11 goals in 21 Newcastle appearances this season, could provide an adequate alternative to the wildly overused Olivier Giroud, but in a way Arsenal already own the same player in Theo Walcott.
Walcott can return similar scoring figures and offers pace to match, but what Arsenal really need is a 20-30 goal mega star in the mould of Edinson Cavani or Radamel Falcao to really shake things up at the top of the table.
If Arsene Wenger is given the rumoured £120m purse to go shopping with, why go to Gap when you can shop in Harvey Nic’s.
