Moyes targets Spurs duo as part of summer rebuilding plan

Manchester United manager David Moyes is poised to attempt a double swoop on White Hart Lane this summer, with reports suggesting Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele are earmarked as part of a Red Devils rebuilding programme.

Moyes, whose side are as long as 9/1 for a top four finish following the goalless draw with Arsenal, will be handed a £100m+ transfer war chest at the end of the season and despite being linked with a number of stars from the continent looks set to use the funds to go after experienced Premier League players.

United are set to lose Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra at the end of the current campaign and Vertonghen has been identified as the man to come in and get the most out of the next generation of defenders at Old Trafford.

The Belgian has impressed since joining Spurs from Ajax in 2012 and could easily fill the Vidic-Ferdinand void to help the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling fulfil their potential.

The 26-year-old is also comfortable on the left and with Moyes frustrated in his efforts to secure an Evra replacement thus far the Spurs man’s versatility will appeal to the Scot.

Vertonghen’s domestic and international team mate Dembele is also on Moyes’ radar, with Old Trafford in desperate need of a midfield spark.

Juan Mata’s recent arrival has papered over the cracks of the United midfield but with the likes of Tom Cleverly, Marouane Fellaini and Shinji Kagawa failing to consistently impress, further recruitment is expected in the summer.

Dembele’s high-energy displays at both Fulham and Tottenham have caught Moyes’ eye and a player with his attributes would provide much-needed cover for what will be a transitional defence and free up some of the champions’ more creative players further up the field.

United will attempt to boost their dwindling top four hopes with a win over Crystal Palace – a feat priced at 11/20 with Ladbrokes – but with the Red Devils now 11 points behind fourth-placed Liverpool, Champions League football looks too big an ask.

As such, expect Moyes to ring the changes this summer starting with a double raid on White Hart Lane.
