Man United and Chelsea to battle for Uruguay striker

Manchester United and Chelsea will commence battle over the signing of Edinson Cavani when the transfer window reopens this summer.

The £54m Uruguayan has struggled to settle in France since signing for PSG and the Premier League duo head a long list of clubs attempting to acquire the 26-year-old’s services.

At Old Trafford, homegrown star Danny Welbeck is the only forward not being linked with a move away from the Red Devils, with speculation mounting over the respective futures of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez.

The latter has grown increasingly frustrated with a lack of first team opportunities, while a failure to land Champions league football – United are 7/2 outsiders for a top four finish at present – could see Rooney and RVP depart.

Rooney could well feature in Cavani’s ultimate destination, with PSG and Chelsea keen on the England striker, while Van Persie has been linked with a bizarre return to Arsenal.

Chelsea, while flying in the Premier League this year, are in similar need of striking reinforcements with Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o all likely to leave west London at the end of the current campaign.

Chelsea remain among the favourites to win the Premier League at 9/5 but it is Blues boss Jose Mourinho’s desire to land a third Champions League trophy that will see the Stamford Bridge outfit attempt to lure Cavani to the capital.

Representatives of the PSG ace recently visited London in a bid to get the wheels in motion but the Uruguayan’s desire to compete in Europe’s top competition and the prices being touted make this a one horse race.

PSG would not allow the former Napoli hit man to go for anything less than the £54m they paid the Italians and this would likely prize United out of the running even if they were to secure an unlikely top four finish in the Premier League.
