Why Man City reject should pick Leicester over all other suitors

Published:

Joleon Lescott’s contract runs out this summer and with Manchester City reluctant to offer the 31-year-old an extention, the centre-back admitted that he’s unlikely to return to the Etihad as an employee next season.

Having attracted interest from West Ham and Fulham over the January transfer window, only to stay put due to City’s failed attempts to bring in Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala, it’s clear Lescott won’t be short of offers. But which club will suit him best?

Fulham – F

Having shipped a league-leading 58 goals this season, it’s easy to see why Fulham were looking to shore up a leaky defence with a player of Lescott’s experience.

Failure to land Lescott has only worsened their standing in the league and, working under a third new coach of the season, look set for the drop at 1/3. It’s difficult to see the former Wolves man following them.

West Ham – D

At the time of West Ham’s pursuit of Lescott they were in the middle of a nightmare month when teams from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City were hammering them.

Since then, they’ve settled into a run of four straight clean sheets and with James’ Tomkins and Collins playing vital roles, the Hammers aren’t likely to shake up a first-choice pairing that looks to be guiding them to a top half finish at 9/2.

Newcastle – C

Alan Pardew is keen to reshape his Newcastle side this summer and bringing in a proven Premier League performer is sure to be near the top of the list, although doing so with Sol Campbell wasn’t exactly a master-stroke.

Unless one of Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor or Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa moves on Lescott will find himself in another battle for game time.

Leicester – A

Enduring the frustration of sitting on the bench for so long, Lescott is going to be desperate to get back to playing regularly.

There won’t be a better place to do that than at a newly-promoted team and Leicester, who look the most likely as the 1/5 favourites to win the Championship, would be a good fit.
