Liverpool can solve Ashley Cole’s Chelsea contract conundrum
At 33 years-old and facing the very real prospect of missing out on a World Cup place this summer, it’s fair to say that Ashley Cole’s fortunes have taken a steep decline this season.
It’s been a bad week for Cole as first he had Roy Hodgson go public by saying it would be difficult for the Chelsea man to regain his place in the England starting XI for the World Cup.
Then, his club manager Jose Mourinho exclaimed he was happy with the performances of the man keeping him out at Stamford Bridge; Cesar Azpilicueta.
Although he is still regarded a shoo-in by Ladbrokes at 1/33 to make the final 23, the dazzling performances of Luke Shaw at Southampton and Kieran Gibbs’ emergence at Arsenal could yet see him slip further behind Leighton Baines in the pecking order.
Perhaps even more pressing for the former Gunner, though, is the fact that his current Chelsea contract is due to expire in the summer and given his advanced years and probable high wages, the list of takers is sure to be on the lean side.
Chelsea appear to be doing just fine without him as they vie for glory at home and in Europe, with 6/4 the price that they lift the title for the first time since 2009/10.
However, after their manager Brendan Rodgers hinted he was an admirer of the full-back, Liverpool may end up being the perfect destination.
The Reds are a club who have struggled massively to provide more than one quality option at left-back for a number of seasons, so much so that they had to dip into the loan market in January.
Although long-term absentee Jose Enrique is still first choice at Anfield, having someone of Cole’s calibre would throw that into doubt next season would benefit both Liverpool and the player greatly.
