First-half flurry to earn Liverpool revenge over Southampton

Published:

St Mary’s may have been a points graveyard for Liverpool in the Premier League era, but Brendan Rodgers’ sharp shooters should prove an entirely different proposition to the side that was flogged 3-1 on their last visit and lost 1-0 at Anfield earlier in the season.

Considering Southampton remain the only team to have bettered Liverpool on their own patch this term, their price of 13/5 to beat them for a second successive season at home is a juicy one.

Similarly, the less risk-averse punt on the Saints in the double-chance market at 4/5 is a healthy return given the extra base it covers.

However, our pick would still be the Premier League’s leading scorers to triumph at 1/1, on the back of one of their trademark whirlwind first halves which have left many opponents reaching for the handrail by half-time.

No team has scored a higher percentage of their league goals before the oranges are handed out than Rodgers’ high-pressing Reds.

Liverpool have scored 12 goals before the break across their last five Premier League outings home and away, at an average of 2.4 per game in that run.

The visitors to find the net in the first 45 minutes is 7/10, Ladbrokes offer 21/10 on the Reds scoring more of their goals before the switch of ends and over 2.5 total Reds goals – which would have landed in their last three top-flight outings – can be backed at 12/5.

However, do not expect Liverpool to have it all their own way against this exciting Saints outfit, who will almost certainly find a way past the visitors’ suspect defence at some point.

Both teams to score as part of an away win looks well worth some attention here at 5/2.
