Yellow Submarine to be torpedoed by Espanyol in La Liga

Published:

Forever in the shadow of their cross-town rivals Barcelona, Espanyol look set to take centre stage this week with victory over a Villarreal team still chasing a top four finish in La Liga this season.

On at 6/4 to win, Espanyol head into this fixture off the back of an impressive 2-1 away victory over fellow high-flyers Athletic Bilbao in what was their second consecutive win in the division as part of a run that has seen the Parakeets lose just one of their last five fixtures in the league.

Home form has been crucial to the side’s success under Javier Aguirre, with the team nicknamed Magico doing the business with wins in three of their last four at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat – their only loss in that run being a 1-0 defeat to leaders Real Madrid.

Ladbrokes has Villarreal priced at 7/4 for an away win but given their current woes, it looks more likely that the Yellow Submarine will sink to another defeat.

The visitors have tasted defeat in three of their last four competitive games and are struggling for results away from El Madrigal having lost three of their last four La Liga matches played on the road.

A draw is priced at 23/10 but given that Villarreal have been involved in just one stalemate from their last 13 fixtures played on the road, that outcome looks unlikely.

Instead, after back-to-back 1-0 home wins over Celta Vigo and Granada, Espanyol should be backed to record another narrow victory here, with odds of 15/2 offered on a repeat scoreline.

Sergio Garcia has opened the scoring in two of their last three home wins in La Liga and the veteran striker is a tempting 11/2 to grab the first goal of the game here against an out-of-sorts Villarreal.

With the Yellow Submarine failing to find the net in two of their last three losses in the division, those confident of an Espanyol triumph could also plump for them to win to nil with odds of 10/3 offered.

Seven points off fourth place and with Champions League hopes fading fast, Espanyol could be the team to put the final nail in the coffin and you could be the ones to benefit.
