Could Barcelona star’s praise for former club hint at a return?
Published:On the eve of Barcelona’s crunch Champions League second round first-leg tie against Manchester City, Gerard Pique did not hesitate when asked about which of the city’s two powerhouse clubs he’d rather sign for.
Despite the Red Devil’s struggles this season, the former Manchester United defender was unequivocal in his praise for the defending Premier League champions.
And his admiration for the club has led to some observers commenting on whether the 27-year-old Spanish international could eventually return to Old Trafford.
Responding to comments made by Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, where the Chilean stated his side were now the biggest club in town, Pique made it clear who he prefers.
“What do you think?” was the defender’s reply to a reporter’s question on whether he’d opt for United or City now.
“If I had to choose one, it would be United.”
“But I am really happy in Barcelona. It is the club of my life and I am not looking to leave. But I always say United is my second team after Barcelona.”
He may not be thinking of a move just yet but could the man Sir Alex Ferguson signed as a precocious 17-year-old return to complete any unfinished business at Manchester United?
Ultimately, the young Pique’s homesickness led to his departure to the Catalan giants but given his progression since there’s no doubt that he would have become a mainstay in Manchester.
David Moyes’ side would certainly appreciate his services given the fact that United lie 11 points off a top-four spot, with Ladbrokes pricing the Red Devils at 11/1 to secure Champions League qualification through that route.
The Spaniard’s current employers are in far ruder health, sitting at the top of La Liga and also into the Copa del Rey final.
Pique and co. are currently evens to land the title and 17/20 for a cup success, with 5/1 about their chances of lifting the European Cup for a fifth time.
And having already enjoyed a career laden with silverware in Spain, Man United appear to head the queue should Pique opt for new challenges further afield.
