Classic dose of FA Cup tonic can see Charlton oust Wednesday
Published:We see it every year in the FA Cup when those teams scrabbling for league form find solace in a plucky cup run and in applying this age old theory, Charlton can find a way past Sheffield Wednesday and into quarter-final dreamland.
The two sides hail from the lower echelons of the Championship, but since Stuart Gray’s installation as Wednesday boss just over a month ago he’s lifted them up to 17th via some impressive results.
However, a long unbeaten run was brought to an abrupt halt by Wigan last time out in a 3-0 loss and at 1/1 the Owls look too short to prevail over Charlton – whose own price of 11/4 appeals far more.
Chris Powell’s Addicks may have embarked on a torrid run of four Championship defeats – which has seen them sink into the bottom three, but the Londoners’ last win laid down the blueprint for another one here.
That came in the fourth-round of the FA Cup, on another trip to Yorkshire where Charlton overcame Huddersfield 1-0 – a club which currently resides three places higher than their Hillsborough hosts.
A convincing 3-0 win on the road at long-time League Two leaders Oxford in round three proved they have a taste for road success in this year’s competition.
Although Charlton have struggled all season in the division, they’ve shown in fits and spurts that they can raise their performance levels in big games, as wins over leaders Leicester and more recently promotion-chasing Brighton testify.
Given that the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Valley just over a month ago, there clearly isn’t a whole lot to separate them.
Charlton escaping with a 1-0 victory as they did against the Terriers is a tempting pick at 10/1 also.
