Are Arsenal closing in on a move for a Real Madrid striker?
Published:Arsenal have moved a step closer to landing Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, according to Sky Sports’ Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague.
The Gunners were in the hunt for the 21-year-old in January as they looked to ease the burden on Olivier Giroud but the Spanish under-21 international chose to stay and fight for his place at the Bernabeu.
But after making just one La Liga appearance all season Morata has grown frustrated at a lack of first team opportunities and is ready to quit the Spanish capital.
And Balague has claimed on Sky Sports News the north London club, who are 13/2 to claim the Premier League title this term, have agreed personal terms with the former Getafe and Atletico Madrid youngster.
Although the Spanish football expert claimed a deal was far from done with both clubs still needing to agree a fee for the player.
Ballague said on Twitter: “Morata has agreed to join Arsenal IF, I repeat IF, I insist IF, clubs agree fee. He will push for Madrid to accept Arsenal’s offer.”
The emergence of Yaya Sanogo during fixtures against Liverpool and Bayern Munich will have pleased the Gunners boss but Morata, who has notched 12 goals in 11 appearances for Spain’s under-21 side, could boost a squad which has heavily relied on Giroud for goals this term.
The Frenchman has often ploughed a lone furrow in attack for the Gunners and his 16 goals this season have been priceless for Wenger’s title and FA Cup chasing squad.
But if Joel Campbell, who scored Olympiakos’ second goal in their 2-0 win over Manchester United, returns from his loan spell in Greece to join Morata at the Emirates Stadium then Arsenal could finally have the firepower to fill up a trophy cabinet which hasn’t seen silverware since 2005.
