The Molde quartet charged with saving Cardiff’s season

Former Udinese forward Jo Inge Berget became the fourth man who started 2014 in the employ of Norwegian club Molde that now finds himself in the Premier League, plotting Cardiff’s survival mission.

Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bagged a third new Norwegian player for the south Wales club, as Berget followed ex-Manchester United youths Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli to the Cardiff City stadium.

The 23-year-old Berget  – who can operate up front or behind a striker – thrived under Solskjaer at Molde and produced the biggest goal-haul of his burgeoning career during 2012, with 13 over 38 games in all competitions leading to a call-up to the Norway senior team.

He then followed that up with another eight last year as Solskjaer’s old side added a Norwegian Cup win to their two title triumphs under the former Man Utd supersub, and the new boy could be in line for his Bluebirds debut in their fourth-round FA Cup tie at Bolton.

Cardiff currently sit bottom of the Premier League, which may explain the highly tempting 13/8 odds about them beating a Bolton side in desperate trouble a division below.

Dougie Freedman’s Trotters are fighting to avoid a second relegation in three seasons and perilously hover just four points above the Championship drop zone at present, having won only two of their last 10 league games.

Solskjaer led his new charges to a come-from-behind victory in his first away match against Newcastle in the last round of the FA Cup, and another draw half-time/Cardiff win full-time at the Reebok can be backed at 5/1.

The ‘baby-faced assassin’ insists he’s building a new Cardiff as opposed to a Manchester United-on-Taff in the Welsh capital, but with Eikrem and Daehli signed up, plus moves for Wilfried Zaha and Fabio da Silva in the pipeline, he’s going about it in a particularly crimson-tinged way (which is bound to please famous lover of red things, Vincent Tan).

Fabio’s move is thought to be near completion and the Brazilian full-back could face brother Rafael on his Bluebirds debut at Old Trafford next time out in the league.

Winger Zaha is also set for a loan move, although rumours that the former Crystal Palace man was undergoing a medical and could make the squad against Bolton were denied by Solskjaer ahead of the match.
