Selby ready to put the rubbish out on his way to European glory
Published:Welshman Lee Selby (17-1-0) will step up his bid to challenge on the world scene when he fights Rendall Munroe (27-3-1) for the vacant EBU featherweight title in Cardiff.
This contest is a noticeable step up for the Barry-born fighter as he plots his route to a world crown in the not too distant future.
The 26-year-old, who claims a win will see him become the new face of Welsh boxing, is the 2/7 favourite with Ladbrokes to become European champion but his opponent, the ‘Boxing Binman’, will have different ideas.
Munroe, who challenged Toshiaki Nishioka for the WBC super-bantamweight title in 2010, is an experienced operator at 33-years-of-age and has two victories on his record over current IBF champion Kiko Martinez.
The Leicestershire fighter hung up his gloves after defeat to Scott Quigg in 2012 but after just four months he returned to action with three wins and now believes he is ready to show his true class.
“This is a step towards another World title fight,” said the Leicester star.
“After I win this fight I will be a two-weight European champion. The talk at the minute is that Selby is ready to challenge for a World title, so after I beat him does that not say that I will be ready for a shot at the World title?”
The southpaw boxer is 11/4 to cause an upset and become a two-weight European champion, launching his own bid at another world title shot but siding with the younger, hungrier Selby is the selection.
On the undercard Anthony Joshua continues his journey towards world heavyweight domination against Welshman Dorian Darch.
Nothing but a win is expected for ‘AJ’ as he fights in front of Darch’s home fans and victory for the Olympic gold medalist will take him a small step closer to realising his world title dream.
A win in Cardiff on Saturday will bring both these special bets closer to reality.
