Rodgers closing in on Liverpool’s ‘major’ January transfer

Published:

In the wake of Liverpool’s crushing win over local rivals Everton, the Reds’ bid for a Champions League spot is set for another boost, as the club are reportedly close to bringing in Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka before the January transfer window closes.

Konoplyanka, 24, is a pacy wide man who can operate on either flank; though he’s likely to operate on the left for Liverpool should he sign.

That position had been earmarked for Victor Moses, though the Nigerian has failed to impress sufficiently on loan from Chelsea.

After missing out on Mohamed Salah, the Reds have been quick to step up their efforts to land the Ukraine international for a fee in the region of £16m and given Brendan Rodgers’ hints in his post-match interview there’s every chance the move will go ahead.

“I think we will hopefully do something over the next couple of days,” Rodgers said.

“Hopefully we can have a major signing before the window shuts and if we can do that we will be set up for the remaining games.”

Since brushing aside Everton in such emphatic fashion it’s no surprise to see the Reds shorten in the top-four stakes, where their chances of remaining in the hallowed berths are now rated at 8/13 with Ladbrokes.

Landing a player of Konoplyanka’s profile is only going to be a plus point for those looking to back the Reds to do achieve their number one aim too.

Konoplyanka’s talents were showcased for his country when he gave Roy Hodgson’s England team the run-around in their two World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine.

He is direct and skilful, but with work rate to match his attacking menace, he would fit the Rodgers’ mould perfectly.
