PSG ready bloated cash package for Spurs’ England defender

Kyle Walker’s name has been bumped up to the top of Paris Saint-Germain’s January shopping list following the news that Christophe Jallet requires surgery and will be sidelined for a lengthy period, leaving a lack of cover at full back.

As a result, Tottenham are bracing themselves for a big money move from the French champions, who are believed to be ready to bid £15m to snare the England man.

Walker has started all but one of Spurs’ Premier League games this season and his offensive approach to right back play is what is especially endearing to the scouting team at the Parc des Princes.

Rocketing up and down the Spurs right flank, the Sheffield-born flier has created an impressive 27 chances this term and, while his defensive ability is regularly sounded out for criticism, his tendency to get caught too high up the pitch won’t be as costly at PSG.

Much like Dani Alves at Barcelona, the 23-year-old loves to maraud forward and with the Catalan club constantly dominating possession high up the pitch, the Brazilian is encouraged to play more like a winger than a defender, knowing the double pivot in central midfield will cover his back should a counter attack suddenly be sprung.

Laurent Blanc favours a similar formation, with Blaise Matuidi, Thiago Motta and Marco Veratti his preferred midfield three. This compact set up is much different to what is utilised at Spurs, where Walker doesn’t have the same protection to fall back on when he goes adventuring up the pitch.

Right back incumbent Gregory Van der Wiel is of a similar mould – place him in a side lacking the added midfield reinforcement and his defensive flaws are easily exploited. As far as contribution in the final third goes, Walker is one of the few in world football better than the Dutch star in this respect.

Tottenham would certainly be reluctant to let him depart should an offer arrive, but they may be better served accepting the cash and signing a right back more adept going backwards in their quest to land a 3/1-rated top four finish this season.
