Nightmare run of fixtures ends all hope of an Arsenal trophy

Published:

For the first time in a while Arsenal fans have a funny feeling whirring around their stomachs, with the possibility of winning some silverware becoming more real with every passing match.

However, they are about to embark on a run of fixtures as barbed as the top of Buckingham Palace’s fence over the course of February and March, which will define their trophy-haul come May.

After drawing Liverpool in the fifth round of the FA Cup, Arsene Wenger’s side are now the 9/2 second favourites to lift that particular trophy.

But, the tie will be played in the middle of a tough run of games for the Gunners, which sees the club play two matches a week against high-quality opposition.

The run starts with the Premier League trip to Liverpool on February 8th, before Manchester United visit the Emirates the following Wednesday.
Then comes the Liverpool cup tie and a midweek meeting with none other than German giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Although a brief respite in high-pressure games follows, the dial is cranked right back up after just three matches as March sees the north London trophy seekers play their away game with Bayern, travel to Chelsea and Tottenham then host Manchester City in consecutive clashes over the course of 19 days.

By then, many of the season’s trophy conversations will be decided and it’s highly likely that Arsenal will have been removed from most, if not all, of them.

It’s therefore the perfect time to take a punt on the generous 2/5 that Wenger endures another trophyless season with the Gunners, especially given that his side have failed to beat Chelsea (twice) and Man Utd this season.

Jack Wilshere and co remain in the Premier League race, at 4/1, and should they manage to imitate that famous saying about London buses, are most likely to do so by winning the Premier League and FA Cup double at 25/1.
