May can lead the way for England in the Six Nations
Published:Gloucester winger Jonny May can take advantage of injuries to Christian Wade and Marlon Yarde to claim the title of top England tryscorer in the upcoming Six Nations tournament.
The 23-year-old, who is 6/1 to finish top of the try charts for England, is in fine form for the Cherry and Whites as his superb long-range solo effort in his side’s 36-18 win in France over Perpignan gave a timely reminder to Stuart Lancaster of his finishing capabilities.
The speedster picked the ball up on his own 22 before slicing his way through four defenders to race all the way to the tryline and into to contention for England selection.
May, who can play at outside centre, wing and full-back, has been in the West Country since 2009 but a series of injuries have halted his progress. He is firing on all cylinders now though in a Gloucester side which is struggling to make an impact.
England know all about his ability after taking him on the recent tours to South Africa and Argentine and with flyers Yarde and Wade out of action, May, who has one cap for his country, is set to be given the task of lighting up an attack that misfired in the Autumn.
Ashton was on the verge of being dropped for England’s clash with New Zealand had it not been for injury to Wade and with his recent form for Saracens not improving a great deal the 2/1 on him being England’s top tournament tryscorer does not appeal.
Fellow pacemen Anthony Watson and Jack Nowell, on at 10/1 and 12/1 respectively, remain untested at the highest level but both offer interesting alternatives should they be handed a place in Stuart Lancaster’s matchday squad.
Mike Brown, who is 7/1 in this market, has been one of England’s most consistent performers since he broke into the side but his tryscoring record in the white shirt – no tries in 21 international appearances – does not make him a contender.
