Landing Holland striker can boost Newcastle’s top-six ambitions
Published:Dutch international striker Luuk de Jong is so fed up with warming the bench at Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, he has issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to Newcastle.
The 23-year-old centre-forward who signed for Gladbach in the summer of 2012 after racking up the goals for FC Twente, has since become a peripheral figure at the club and has only been granted 85 minutes of playing time this season, despite scoring eight times in his debut campaign.
Unsurprisingly, De Jong’s desire to leave the Bundesliga club has reached boiling point and with Alan Pardew looking to bolster his striking options, the ground seems particularly fertile for a deal to be pushed through in January.
When quizzed over a potential move to Tyneside, De Jong reportedly exclaimed: “I can imagine going.”
It’s thought Gladbach’s preference would be to sanction a permanent transfer to any suitors, though Pardew is believed to be keener on a loan for the remainder of the campaign, with a view to crossing the T’s in the summer if De Jong does the business.
Having been as high as sixth in the Premier League three games ago, a string of losses have left Newcastle in need of a boost and capturing De Jong would be the perfect remedy to get the Magpies back on course.
The Geordies top-six credentials have been proven by playing extremely well against the two teams currently occupying first and second in the Premier League yet coming out on the wrong side of the scoreline on both occassions, being particularly unlucky against Manchester City.
If Newcastle could boost their attacking options with De Jong – who scored 29 times in 41 Twente appearances before heading to Germany – then the sky high 28/1 on a top-six finish could yet represent a bumper price for Ladbrokes punters.
