Dortmund’s Holtby swoop could be music to Man United’s ears

David Moyes has made transfer headlines of his own recently with the capture of Spain ace Juan Mata but the United manager could soon be given a huge boost by Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are on the brink of granting midfield outcast Lewis Holtby a return to the Bundesliga, with Borussia Dortmund keen on landing the former Schalke man.

And while the 23-year-old’s exit is unlikely to dent Tim Sherwood’s 5/2 chances of a top four finish, the move could serve to boost Manchester United’s chances of success next term.

Schalke and PSV have also shown an interest in Holtby but Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has shown the most initiative after seeing his side decimated by injuries.

With Dortmund trailing rivals and Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich by 14 points Klopp is keen to beef up his midfield and Holby’s £5m return to Germany could potentially free up United target Marco Reus.

United remain in seventh place in the Premier League and are odds-against at 11/5 to secure Champions League football next term.

However, the £37.1m arrival of Mata, the return from injury of Robin van Persie and the imminent signing of Wayne Rooney on a new long-term deal has optimism at a season-high at Old Trafford.

The current situation has also made United a much more attractive option for potential transfer targets and Moyes is expected to put this to the test with a summer swoop for Reus.

The 24-year-old German has a £30m release clause in his contract and, while this is not activated until the summer of 2015, the arrival of Holtby could mean Klopp is willing to do business.

Moyes is also keen on bringing Reus’ countryman Toni Kroos to Old Trafford in the summer after watching the 24-year-old in action last week and while a winter window switch now seems unlikely don’t be surprised to see the German duo in United red next season.
