Arsenal target the new Thierry Henry to aid silverware bid

Published:

Despite Arsene Wenger insisting Arsenal will not do any business in the January transfer window, it is no secret the Frenchman and his team have been scouring the globe for attacking reinforcements.

Reports suggest Wenger, whose side are 4/1 to win the Premier League, was in Spain last night to run the rule over Barca stars Christian Tello and Pedro, while scout Gilles Grimandi was in the stands to see PSG lose to Montpellier in the Coupe de France.

Rumours about a move for Schalke forward Julian Draxler also refuse to disappear but the north London club could be set to bring the ‘New Thierry Henry’ to the Emirates Stadium.

Henri Saivet, who was an ever-present in the France youth set-up, has had a breakthrough season at Bordeux putting in a number of eye-catching performances for the Ligue 1 club.

And the 23-year-old seems to have caught the attention of Wenger, who is no stranger to talent spotting in the French leagues, with three goals and four assists so far this season.

With Theo Walcott out for the rest of the season and Nicklas Bendtner recovering from an ankle injury, Olivier Giroud is carrying the burden of scoring the goals that can lead Arsenal to their first trophy for eight years.

But a move for Saivet, who has been likened to Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer, would boost Wenger’s options as he can play both wide and as a central striker.

The Gunners boss has a history of converting wingers into centre-forwards and he would certainly enjoy the challenge of converting the Senegal international into a feared goalscorer.

A bid in the region of £6m could be enough to tempt Bordeaux to cash in on Saivet and it could prove a real bargain should he help Arsenal finish with a Premier League and FA Cup double, on at 25/1 with the bookmaker.
