Arsenal hoping Berbatov will be the answer to their striking woes

Arsenal may be proudly sitting at the top of the Premier League table, however, with a dwindling number of attacking options their title challenge could be under serious threat.

Match-winning hero Nicklas Bendtner joins talisman Olivier Giroud on the sidelines following an ankle injury sustained when scoring late on in the Gunners’ 2-0 victory over Cardiff City.

And the Danish striker’s misfortune has seen rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Fulham forward Dimitar Berbatov intensify as manager Arsene Wenger looks set to go in search of reinforcements.

According to The Sun, the former Tottenham hitman is due to sign a one-year deal at the Emirates with the option of extending that for a second year.

A fee of £2m has been mooted by The Mirror with Fulham thought to be keen to cash in before the Bulgarian’s contract expires in the summer.

Arsenal are currently 4/1 to land a fourth Premier League title with Ladbrokes and should Berbatov make the switch to the red half of north London those odds could shorten.

And with both Giroud and Bendtner now out of action that leaves Lukas Podolski, who has only recently recovered from a four-month lay-off, as the only senior option left up-front.

Berbatov’s arrival would add much-needed experience to the Gunners’ frontline, and should Wenger manage to coax the best out of the mercurial striker, it could prove to be a season-defining signing.

Arsenal are evens to finish in the top two for the first time since the 2004-2005 season.

And their interest in Berbatov could well be heightened given his recent appearance on the scoresheet when helping Fulham secure a vital three points against West Ham.

Much has already been made of the potential lack of depth in Wenger’s squad.

However a move for the Cottagers’ forward could go some way to allaying any fans’ fears surrounding their Premier League assault.
