12 Years A Slave tipped for Bafta success

Not content with being tipped for the top gongs at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes this year, Steve McQueen’s movie 12 Years A Slave is now expected to clean up at the Baftas too.
The film, which stars Chiwitel Ejifor and Brad Pitt and tells the tale of a free man who is abducted and sold into slavery, has seen its director and stars nominated for a plethora of top awards and Ladbrokes is expecting the film to sweep the British Academy awards.
At 2/5 the film is the clear favourite to land the Best Film gong while British star Ejiofor is also odds-on at 1/3 to collect the prize for Best Actor.
Fellow Brit Michael Fassbender leads the betting for Best Supporting Actor at 1/4 and he is joined by his female co-star Lupita Nyong’o who tops the Best Supporting Actress betting at 8/13.
However, while the film is expected to emerge as the biggest winner on the night it is director McQueen who looks most likely to miss out on personal recognition.
The Brit is among the front runners to get the nod for Best Director at 6/5 but is pipped to favouritism by Alfonso Cuaron who is nominated for space thriller Gravity and is priced at 10/11 to make a winner’s acceptance speech.
Cate Blanchett is tipped to walk away with the Best Actress trophy for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, while Cuaron’s Gravity is the favourite to be named Outstanding British Film.
And while the nominations in each category reads like a veritable who’s who of the best the UK and Hollywood have to offer, the bookmaker rates the likelihood of any upsets as pretty slim.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes commented: “12 Years A Slave dominates the nominations and the odds suggests it does so for a reason.
“With such strong favourites in every category it’s hard to see many upsets at this stage.”
