Sunderland v Chelsea: Rotation and goals expected for both sides

Published:

Sunderland’s chances of making it any further in the Capital One Cup look slim as they host Chelsea for the second time in five games.

The odds with Ladbrokes confirm the mountainous task that lies ahead of Gus Poyet’s side, with the hosts named the 5/1 outsiders to win the match, the draw a 3/1 possibility and the visiting Chelsea an 8/15 odds-on shot to seal victory.

The pair’s recent Premier League clash yielded a total of seven strikes at the start of December, the ninth meeting in the last 10 between these two that’s seen over 2.5 goals, but both clubs’ recent Capital One exploits hint that a serious dose of rotation will be handed out ahead of this quarter final.

The history of goal-heavy games between the sides shouldn’t be affected by the shuffling of the respective packs though, as in all five combined ties in the competition so far, both sides have scored two goals or more.

That leads to a quite obvious punt on the 8/11 that there is over 2.5 goals scored at the Stadium of Light, but in the search for some greater value perhaps the 7/4 on the total number of net ripplers going over 3.5 is more prudent.

Given Chelsea’s overwhelming ascendency in the match betting market, coupling them to win with a game containing over 2.5 goals in the total result section can land you odds of 13/10, a bet that would be wise considering it has landed in four of the last five games against Sunderland.

Or, for a more lucrative punt, Chelsea’s trend of winning both previous games in the competition 2-0, both of which were also on the road, points to a successful 7/1 payout this time around for a third successive 2-0 road win.
