Solskjaer not best value Scandinavian in Cardiff manager market
Malky Mackay’s inevitable dismissal from the Cardiff helm has declared the book open on which unlucky so-and-so is going to work under Vincent Tan next.
The next permanent Bluebirds boss, according to the bookies, is going to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who’s early odds of 4/9 make him market leader in the early exchanges.
Due to the ever-fluctuating nature of next manager betting, though, it’d be best advised to steer well clear of the former Manchester United man’s thin price.
Solskjaer is a highly regarded coach, winning the first two league titles in current club Molde’s history in his native Norway and, with his heavy links to the West Brom vacancy also, it appears he’s closer than ever to completing a long-anticipated move into Premier League coaching.
With the Baggies having allegedly already carried out discussions with Molde, however, not to mention the more harmonious environment behind the scenes, the Hawthorns is his far likelier destination.
Sven Goran Eriksson is a far better value bet at this time, with the Swede’s odds currently standing at 5/2, rendering him second favourite.
Getting involved with smaller reputation clubs has never been an issue for the former England coach, so long as the price is right and Cardiff’s foreign investors are not short of a few bob.
From an outsiders perspective, it appears one of Tan’s many grievances with Mackay was that he wasn’t a glamorous name; competent, talented, target hitting, sure, but not exactly Hollywood.
Sven fits this bill perfectly and it’s already been mooted in some sections of the national press that Tan approached him to take over from Mackay when the axe fell just under a week ago.
Currently in charge at Guangzhou R&F, the only stumbling block to procure the Eriksson’s services would be the issue of compensation, which certainly won’t be cheap given the £2m-a-year he reportedly earns at present.
