PSG plot January raid on Chelsea’s attacking midfield quarters
With an excess of attacking midfield talent without any exceptional striker to speak of, Chelsea may be prepared to trim down in the creative department to make room for a goal-getter in January.
The likes of Edinson Cavani and Falcao have again been linked with a mega-money switch to west London and, aware of their intent to acquire a sharper spearhead, Paris Saint-Germain are keen to bolster their transfer kitty in exchange for one of Jose Mourinho’s many string-pulling maestros.
Juan Mata and Eden Hazard are whom they’re interested in according to reports at home and abroad.
Belgian playmaker Hazard is unlikely to be flogged having only recently begun to showcase his best form since a £32m switch to the Premier League last summer, arguably performing to a standard that would make him Chelsea’s best player so far this season.
However, it’s been a different story for the man who has grown accustomed to having that very tag attached to his name.
Diminutive Spaniard Juan Mata has been voted the club’s player of the year in both of his seasons at the club, but, surprisingly, has found himself confined to the bench for the majority of this campaign since their Portuguese coach returned to Stamford Bridge.
He has recently worked a way back into the starting line up, but this hasn’t deterred PSG from firming up their interest. The French side have allegedly made contact regarding Mata’s availability already, pledging to pay £40m for his services when the transfer window re-opens in January.
It’s evident that the Blues don’t need the money, but an over-populated squad could lead to disharmony from within and with Mourinho known to prefer working with smaller squads, he may not be adverse to letting Mata move for mega money, especially to a team that’s not a domestic rival.
As it stands, Chelsea’s odds for the Premier League title stand at 10/3 with Ladbrokes.
