Man Utd v Everton: Moyes’ insider knowledge to help forge win

Published:

Successive away draws may have stalled Manchester United’s Premier League ascent, though 12 games without tasting defeat in all competitions, including stirring wins over Bayer Leverkusen and leaders Arsenal, finally has the champions looking something like their old selves again.

The visit of Everton is one of those fixtures in the calendar which is greeted with vigorous rubbing together of hands by Red Devils fans; such have been the Toffees’ toils at Old Trafford in the top-flight.

Everton’s league record at the Theatre of Dreams is woeful, as in 20 trips down the M62 they’ve not returned to Merseyside with three points on a single occasion, losing 16 times.

In fact an absolute ding-dong 4-4 draw during the 2011/12 season remains the Toffees’ only point at Old Trafford in the last seven trips – which in itself could easily see punters gravitate towards the 7/10 on offer for a home win.

It is however important to recognise that Everton are in impressive form themselves – unbeaten in six league games – and have just made mincemeat of Stoke in their previous fixture 4-0.

If David Moyes is to get one over his old employers then it goes without saying that his players will be made to work extremely hard for it.

The Scot’s Goodison Park successor, Roberto Martinez, has not only upheld the attacking football championed by Moyes, but has also made them damn hard to beat – only Manchester City have defeated them in the league.

Four clean sheets in five games for Martinez’ side suggests that if United prevail do then a one-goal margin may just be the most likely length of victory, priced at 11/4 with Ladbrokes.

Seven goals scored in two games for Everton, also points towards the 12/5 on United to win with both team finding the net.
