Likeable Mo Farah a certainty for top three SPOTY finish
Published:When the latest winner of the coveted Sports Personality of the Year award is announced, there is little doubting who Ladbrokes are expecting to take the stage to collect it.
Andy Murray is the whopping 1/50 favourite for the title of Britain’s most revered sports person over the last 12 months, thanks to becoming the first British man to win Wimbledon since 1936.
As a result, backing him to win will take quite an outlay in order to reap the financial rewards and with each-way betting unavailable, it may pay to take your punting pot to the place markets.
In that respect, lovable athlete Mo Farah is an attractive option. The double Olympic champion followed up his superb 2012, where he finished fourth at the SPOTY ceremony with eight percent of the vote, by claiming the 10,000m and 5,000m World Championship double.
Not only that, but Farah also managed to break a 16-year European record in the 1500m with a time of 3:28.81 during a July meeting in Monaco, making him the sixth fastest man over the distance.
With the Somalian-born Isleworthian’s popularity constantly on the increase after the London games, thanks to public appearances and the infamous Mobot celebration, it’s therefore easy to see why the runner is installed as the 11/8 favourite to finish as runner-up this year.
Farah is 3/1 to finish in the bronze medal position and his chances of finishing in the podium places are boosted by the lack of fellow Olympians in the list.
In the 2012 edition, Farah was pipped to the top-three by Bradley Wiggins, who lifted the trophy thanks to his Tour de France and Olympics exploits, and Jessica Ennis, who finished second on the back of her heptathlon success.
With this year’s shortlist containing only Christine Ohuruogu, paralympian Hannah Cockcroft and Sir Ben Ainslie from last summer’s games, Farah’s chances of finishing in the top three are boosted.
