Everton emerge as real top-four contenders at a healthy price

Published:

With another weekend of Premier League action in the bank, the battle for the top four took another lurch towards clarity with Everton emerging as the best priced option for any potential punters.

Roberto Martinez’ men lie in fifth spot after their crushing 4-0 defeat of Stoke at Goodison Park and are just three points off second spot.
Not many could have predicted the transition from David Moyes to Martinez to be so smooth for the Toffees and at odds of 10/1 they are simply a scrumptious piece of value to crack the Champions League spots.

The former Wigan manager has continued the Moyes tradition of making Everton difficult to beat. In fact an away game at the Etihad, where Manchester City have built the best home record in the league, is the only time Everton haven’t picked up at least a point this season. No other team has lost fewer matches.

But, it is the form at Goodison that makes the Merseyside Blues such tempting flutters. Chelsea, Tottenham and arch rivals Liverpool have already come and gone without winning and with goals flowing like champagne at a Formula One podium presentation, it’s clear that all visitors to Everton’s patch will have a tough time topping them.

Of the odds-against chances, it’s Liverpool, at 5/4, that lead the way. However, they will have to do without Daniel Sturridge for potentially two months. Tottenham are the next in line to the top-four throne, according to the market, but haven’t won in four matches and are three points (and 12 goals) behind the Champions League race.

Southampton trail the Toffees at 25/1, which seems a fair price given their upcoming torrid run of fixtures. Meanwhile Newcastle, who’ve won four games on the spin, could be a tempting proposition at 100/1.

However, with a history of finishing in and around the league’s top six and form on their side, the smart money should definitely go on Martinez’s men.
