David Moyes can lead Manchester United to Capital One and FA Cup
Published:A second consecutive Premier League title may be beyond Manchester United but David Moyes is still worth backing to lead the Red Devils to victory in the League Cup and FA Cup this season.
The Old Trafford club are available at 20/1 to retain the division’s top honour, but with the Reds 10 points off leaders Arsenal, it may prove a shrewder move to look to the domestic cups, with United in the semi-finals of the League Cup and looking at a relatively straightforward FA Cup third round tie.
January will be a pivotal month for these chances, with Manchester United starting things off against Swansea City at Old Trafford in the FA Cup.
The Reds have never lost to the Welsh club in the Premier League, winning four of the five meetings between the two and with cup rivals Manchester City and Chelsea facing away trips to Championship challengers Blackburn Rovers and Derby County respectively, Moyes’ men could be sitting pretty come the fourth round draw.
United can currently be backed at a handsome 7/1 to win the FA Cup and as the most successful club in the history of competition, remain ones to watch.
And even if they do face cross-town rivals City at some stage in the competition, history suggests the Premier League champions should be favoured, with the Reds winning six of the nine FA Cup contests between the two.
The Old Trafford side have an identically favourable head-to-head record with Chelsea in the competition and, in truth, should have eliminated the Blues from last year’s tournament, letting a 2-0 lead slip to a Juan Mata-inspired Pensioners side.
Moyes will also have his eye on Capital One Cup glory, with the Reds facing a two-leg semi-final against a Sunderland team currently in the relegation mire.
United are the 4/6 favourites to win the first leg at the Stadium of Light, while anyone backing them to go all the way could be tempted by the 6/4 offered by Ladbrokes.
The Red Devils will most likely face Manchester City in the final and though they suffered a 4-1 mauling at the hands of Manuel Pellegrini’s side earlier in the season, the Sky Blues will be a long way from the Etihad for this game with memories of their 1-0 loss to Wigan at Wembley last term fresh in the mind.
Premier League glory may be unlikely, but write off United and Moyes in the cups at your peril.
