Christine Ohuruogu ahead in the race for Sportswoman of the Year
Published:Christine Ohuruogu looks set to add to her glittering array of titles with the Sunday Times and Sky Sports 2013 Sportswoman of the Year award and it’s not too late to back the 29-year-old for success.
The runner, who won gold in the 400 metres at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing as well as a silver medal in the same event at last year’s London games, is currently priced at 2/5 to claim the prestigious sports award.
It follows her breathtaking 400 metres victory in the World Championship in Moscow, a win which saw her become the first British female to claim the title on two separate occasions.
That her previous success in this competition came way back in 2007 is further testament to her longevity in the sport – something which officials are evidently keen to recognise.
The good news for Ohuruogu is that she has also garnered the support of other famous faces from the world of track and field, with Sally Gunnell this week giving her backing to the London-born star during an interview with Sky Sports.
“What she’s done compared to what other women have done in athletics is quite outstanding,” she told the news provider.
The nearest challenger to Ohuruogu is cyclist Becky James, who claimed four medals in the space of five days at the recent Cycling World Championships, and can currently be backed at 9/2.
Meanwhile, heptathlon heroine Jessica Ennis-Hill has called on officials to recognise the efforts of world skeleton bobsleigh champion Shelley Rudman.
The 32-year-old can be backed at 8/1 to take the top honour and after her triumph at the World Championships as well as her previous success at the 2006 Turin Winter Games, where she was Britain’s only medal winner, she remains an outsider to watch out for.
