Chelsea told to smash British transfer record to land Falcao

Despite joining ‘project Monaco’ for around £40m this summer, rumours are rife that Radamel Falcao is deeply unhappy with the way things are panning out in the principality and Chelsea for one are keeping close tabs on the situation.

However, Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea paymasters have been told the former Atletico Madrid striker will not be sold for anything less than £80m if they are serious about buying him in January.

There is the possibility this figure could come down if either Fernando Torres or Demba Ba are used as makeweights as part of the deal.

At present Torres’ own £50m move to Stamford Bridge remains the highest fee ever paid for a footballer by a club from British shores, but it shows just how underwhelming an impact the Spaniard has made to now be considered as a pawn in this move.

Despite Falcao enjoying a typically prolific start in his Monaco career – where he has netted nine Ligue 1 goals in 14 appearances – the 27-year-old is reportedly very disgruntled at being paid less per year than in the original contract he signed at the French club.

The Spanish press have reported Falcao is now looking for an escape route in January at all costs, and considering the Colombian has not yet featured in the Champions League this season, his signature is even more attractive to the likes of Chelsea.

As it stands the west Londoners are going well on all fronts, second in the Premier League and priced at 9/4 to claim a third title under Mourinho’s guidance, while safely through in Europe the Blues are 14/1 fifth favourites to win the big one.

If they could pull off this audacious swoop for a man who scored 32 goals in 37 Atletico appearances last season, expect those odds to shrink.
