Chelsea looking closely at Inter Milan duo for January window
Published:Having already suffered a number of defeats this season, Chelsea are keen to add to their squad in January. Mourinho is clearly not satisfied with his squad and even declared that he was angry and worried after their defeat to Newcastle earlier this month.
The Blues have conceded a number of goals in recent matches, most notably of all three a piece against struggling Sunderland and Stoke. Following the 3-2 defeat to Stoke, Mourinho immediately announced that his side were in trouble.
His side’s are usually known for their defensive solidity but have kept just four clean sheets in the Premier League this season hence the interest in Inter defender Ranocchia. At 6 ft 5, the Italian defender would add height to the Chelsea defence which should help them to defend set pieces, an aspect which has become a bit of an Achilles heel this season.
The arrival of Ranocchia could also mean the departure of David Luiz. The Brazilian international has never been a favourite of Mourinho who disapproves of his tactical indiscipline which can leave the defence exposed.
Another man on his way out of Stamford Bridge could be Juan Mata. The talented Spaniard has failed to win over Mourinho despite his evident quality and has been linked to a swap deal with Guarin at Inter. The Colombian international would add physicality and a direct goal threat as opposed to the more subtle play of Mata and crucially would be eligible to play in Europe.
However Chelsea could face competition as Manchester United have also shown an interest in Guarin as they look to strengthen their midfield having missed out on a number of targets over the summer.
United themselves are also chasing Wesley Sneijder who could be the link they need between midfield and attack. However the Dutchman could not play for them in the Champions League having already appeared for Galatasaray earlier this season, making Guarin the favoured option.
