Aston Villa v Manchester United: Rooney to punish Villains

Published:

United need to get back to winning ways after back to back defeats in the Premier League and Aston Villa look to be the perfect team for this.

Rooney has scored more goals against the Villains than any other Premier League side and can be backed at 5/4 to score in the game. With Van Persie out with a thigh problem, Rooney will be United’s most likely source of goals and so looks even more tempting at 9/2 to be the first goalscorer. A combined Wayne Rooney goal and a Manchester United victory also appeals and is priced at 2/1.

Another player who could be worth backing is Javier Hernandez. With no Van Persie, the Mexican international could be given a starting berth and can be found at 7/4 to take advantage of this by scoring.

United have other injury concerns, with Fellaini and Carrick also expected to miss out. However they have a strong record against Villa having lost just once in their last 35 league games. United last lost at Villa Park 18 years ago, making them strong favourites to pick up the three points at 4/5.

Although Villa has been on a five match unbeaten run until their defeat to Fulham last weekend, their home record has been poor all season. The Villains have suffered four home defeats, scoring just six in seven home games in the process.

Although United themselves have just one clean sheet in their last 11 league games, they look likely to keep Villa out on Sunday afternoon. Christian Benteke has failed to scored in over 10 hours of league football yet is still Villa’s top scorer with four goals, perhaps summarising their problems. Therefore the United clean sheet looks appealing at 6/4 while a combined United victory and clean sheet looks even more enticing and can be backed at 2/1.
