AP McCoy looks excellent value to claim second place at SPOTY

Having become the first British winner at Wimbledon in 77 years Andy Murray is the shortest priced favourite in the history of the event at 1/14.

With Murray such an overwhelming favourite to win the number one prize at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year ceremony, it is the competition for second and third places that holds all the excitement.

There are a number of contenders but it is AP McCoy who looks best placed and well valued at 2/1 to be runner-up.

McCoy has had another incredible year winning an unprecedented 18th consecutive champion jumps jockey title. Despite suffering a fall which resulted in him going into intensive care, the jockey is yet again on course to add number 19 to this record.

Although McCoy faces competition from the likes of Mo Farah and Chris Froome, priced at 11/8 and 9/2 respectively to come second, McCoy enjoys a strong following illustrated by the awards ceremony three years ago which saw him voted 2010’s Sports Personality.

Horse racing has long been an important sport for the British public and this has shown no signs of dying down in recent years.

McCoy has achieved legendary status in his sport and the British people are certain to show their appreciation of this. Earlier this year, in November, McCoy became the first jump jockey to ride 4,000 winners when he rode to victory on Mountain Tunes at Towcester. This historic landmark saw him claim almost 1,500 more wins than Richard Johnson the second most successful rider in history.

McCoy is currently favourite to claim third place at 11/4 as he did in the 2002 SPOTY. The Northern Irishman seems set to finish on the podium either in second or third place. Although he faces stiff competition, McCoy looks great value to finish second which would give him a complete set of podium finishes.
