AC Milan plot move for AVB as Champions League tie looms large

Massimiliano Allegri’s days in the San Siro hot seat could well be numbered after reports emerged linking ousted Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas with the Italian’s job at AC Milan.

Earlier this week we reported on the likelihood of AVB being hot property on the continent with the Rossoneri named as one of three potential destinations for the 36-year-old coach.

And those suggestions have moved one step closer to coming to fruition with The Times reporting that the Diavolo have contacted the Portuguese coach about coming to the troubled Serie A club.

Milan have endured a difficult start to the season and though still in the Champions League, face a testing tie against Atletico Madrid, with the seven-time European Cup winners available at 9/5 to win the first leg in the San Siro, while the Spaniards are on at 6/4 for victory and the draw is 11/5.

At present, Allegri remains in charge of the Rossoneri, but with the Italian giants 10th in the Serie A table, some 16 points off a Champions League place and, worse still, 24 points off bitter-rivals and 1/5 Scudetto favourites Juventus, results need to improve fast.

This weekend the Diavolo face Inter Milan in a game neither side can afford to lose. AC can be backed at 7/4 for victory but given the Nerazzurri’s solid start to the season under Walter Mazzarri, a victory for the blue half of the city at 6/4 could be the more realistic prospect.

And even a draw, at 23/10 with Ladbrokes, could be seen as the final straw for Allegri with AVB waiting in the wings and no doubt relishing the chance of managing one of Italy’s biggest clubs with the young boss likely to be given the remainder of the season to reshape the team in his image.

AC Milan are set to welcome two new players to the club come January, with Keisuke Honda and Valencia defender Adil Rami arriving early in 2014 and with Villas-Boas at the helm those behind the scenes may be willing to release more funds to help the team domestically and in Europe.

With a squad already boasting plenty of quality in the form of Mario Balotelli and Kaka among others, should AVB step in, then his experience of success in the Europa League with Porto could translate to Champions League glory for the Rossoneri, with the Italians 66/1 outsiders to win with Ladbrokes.
