West Ham chasing former Man United man to solve striker crisis
Published:Sam Allardyce made a name for himself by giving seasoned foreign talent a new lease of life at Bolton and now it appears the West Ham boss may revert to this policy by going after Diego Forlan in January.
With Andy Carroll about as near to a comeback as the CD walkman, it’s no surprise to see West Ham being linked with centre-forwards in January.
Former West Ham striker Jermain Defoe is one name which consistently pops up, though it now seems Allardyce has turned his attentions to South America to help dig the Hammers out of a hole.
Once a figure of ridicule on English shores in an ill-fated stint at Manchester United, Forlan went on to stick up a couple of digits at his critics with particularly prolific spells at both Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.
After a slightly disappointing season at Serie A giants Inter Milan, Forlan left for Brazilian club Internacional last year and now he is the club’s leading scorer at 34 years of age.
Nevertheless, the Uruguayan international is rumoured to favour a move back to Europe and the east London club have emerged as favourites.
Someone of Forlan’s goal-scoring pedigree could be just the thing West Ham need to climb away from danger in the Premier League, while he still has a point to prove in England after an underwhelming two years at Old Trafford.
As it stands the Londoners have gone four league games without winning, failing to score twice as they skirt the relegation places in 16th.
As a result the Hammers’ odds to finish in the top 10 have continued to drift, now at 9/2, while they’re the same price for the drop.
