Wake up, smell the coffee and oppose American heroes at O2

World number ones Bob and Mike Bryan are 2/5 to win another season-ending championship but will have to overcome Spanish duo David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco to secure a fourth title at the O2.

The all-conquering Americans, who won their 13^th, 14^th and 15^th Grand Slams of an awesome career at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year will be desperate to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2009.

However, their passage to the final has been anything but smooth after losing their first match to debutants and eventual semi-finalists Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo before winning their next four by surviving deciding championship tie-breaks in all.

This explains why the Davis Cup heroes are available to back at such a friendly price despite only losing one set in their previous three meetings against Marrero and Verdasco who are 2/1 to complete a perfect bow in London.

Encouragingly for supporters of the number one seeds, who secured the top ranking for the fifth straight time this campaign, all three of those previous encounters came on clay and the O2 courts should give their power-packed game an extra edge.

However, there is no doubt that doubles specialist Marrero and this year’s Wimbledon singles quarter-finalist Verdasco have been the most impressive throughout the week in Greenwich.

Straight sets victories in their opening two matches against countrymen Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, as well as Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, all but sealed their semi-final spot before succumbing to Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in an inconsequential defeat.

They proved the irrelevance of that performance with an impressive win over the minimum distance against Dodig and Melo in the semi-finals and it’s impossible to envisage them getting swept aside by the favourites.

The 8/11 that the Spanish pair win at least a set looks a cast-iron route to success considering the paths each set of players have taken to get here but such is the contrasting form of the two teams the 2/1 that Marrero and Verdasco can seal the win cannot be ignored.

It’s always difficult to oppose perennial champions and no pair has dominated the doubles game more than the Bryans. But the reality is that they have had to call upon every reserve to hang on this week and they face opposition which are fresher and high on a confidence based purely on form rather history.
