Spurs v Sheriff: Defoe price boost must be taken advantage of

Published:

Tipping Jermain Defoe to score the opening goal when Tottenham host Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League may be utterly predictable, but as the age-old adage goes, if something isn’t broken, then why fix it.

Defoe has netted four goals in Spurs three Europa League outings so far, including at least one in each fixture, while he has broken the deadlock in two of these games.

Given that he was an unused substitute in the latest Premier League 0-0 draw at Everton, Defoe should start here as a part of Andre Villas-Boas’ pack shuffling and must be classified as Spurs’ leading hope of a goal.

With Ladbrokes also boosting his price to open the scoring from 9/4 to 5/2, which is the best available in the industry, backing Defoe to strike first is a no-brainer.

The more cautious may prefer the 2/5 that the England striker finds the net at any point in the 90 minutes, but this is not the most enticing of prices.

Something else that Ladbrokes are offering the best industry price for, is the straight Spurs win at 1/7, but it is worth doubling up in the search for better value.

Spurs have led at half-time and full-time in each of their Europa League games thus far and are 3/10 to do so again, with 17/20 a fair price that they lead after 30 minutes at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham have not conceded a goal in the competition yet, but it is worth noting that Sheriff have found the net in all of their nine away games since the end of July.

Both teams to score can be backed at 7/5 and Sheriff did create some useful chances in the first showdown between the pair in Moldova, while it is 2/1 that each team scores in a Tottenham success.
