Southampton vs Tottenham: Saints can overcome wobble
Published:Having failed to win their last 5 games, Southampton are faced with their worst spell under Manuel Pochettino should they fail to beat Tottenham on Sunday.
The Saints have had it tough of late, being forced into fielding weakened sides against some of the division’s best, including Arsenal and Manchester City. But a 3-2 loss at home to Aston Villa was a match they probably should have won.
Even with this poor run, Southampton have still only conceded 15 goals all season, making them the joint strongest defence in the league. A beleaguered Spurs attack, who’ve only scored 15 goals themselves this term, could therefore struggle to find the back of the net.
Whilst Southampton have strong attacking options up-front with the likes of Lambert and Osvaldo, neither have showed enough consistency to suggest they could score more than 20 goals this season. In fact winger Jay Rodgriguez has been the biggest forward threat for the Saints, netting three times in four matches. He is 7/1 to score first and 11/5 to score anytime against Spurs.
Following the 5-0 loss at home to Liverpool and the subsequent sacking of manager AVB, caretaker boss Tim Sherwood may start with the previously unfavoured Emmanuel Adebayor. Adebayor looked invigorated in the Capital One Cup under Sherwood and his height and strength may well be required against a strong Saints backline. If he starts, he may well nick a goal. You can get him to score anytime at 11/5.
The last three renditions of this battle have all been tight, with the winning margin all being just a slim, single goal and with Southampton proving miserly at home a win for the south coast club by just a single strike looks handsome at 10/3. Tottenham to prevail in the same manner can be snapped up at the identical price.
