Newcastle v Chelsea: Blues to kill the game in last 10 minutes

Published:

Having beaten Manchester City and Arsenal in a week, Chelsea arrive at Newcastle with the wind firmly in their sails and with a fondness for scoring second-half goals to boot.

This fixture produced a crackerjack of a game last season with four second-half goals as Newcastle ran out 3-2 winners.

Although they eventually lost, Chelsea had taken the lead with a second-half double that day and it’s this propensity for notching after the break which has propelled them towards the Premier League summit so far this season.

In four of their last five league games, Chelsea have done more of their scoring in the second period and at 13/10, this is a punt worth taking on again as they visit St James’ Park.

Furthermore, Jose Mourinho’s side have developed a much sought after ability to kill games off in the last 10 minutes of matches – a great attribute for any potential title winners – having bagged in the last 10 minutes four times in their last three Premier League outings.

This gives rise to the visitors’ rather short price of 6/4 to score a goal between the 75th minute and the final whistle, but nonetheless it’s a bet which should pay dividends once again.

It appears Mourinho’s time in Spain, where he witnessed Barcelona’s ‘pressing’ game reap so much success, has rubbed off on the Special One, as his Chelsea side are wearing down the opposition by the time they get into the closing stages.

Those who are simply interested in the match odds might wish to take Chelsea’s price of 3/5, though Newcastle’s last two home performances against Liverpool and Man City (in the League Cup) were drawn – showing they will be no pushovers.

Therefore an away win by the margin of a single goal at 13/2 appeals also.
