Nadal wants first indoor win in eight years at ATP World Tour Finals
Published:Having won two Grand Slams and eight other tournaments, Rafael Nadal has had one of the most successful years of his tennis career so far. The Spaniard overcame a serious knee injury eight months ago and has been victorious in the French Open and US Open this year. But one title that has always eluded him is the ATP Would Tour Finals.
The tournament, which begins on Monday 4th November, will play host to Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro, Stanislas Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych, Richard Gasquet and of course, Nadal. But having only ever won one indoor title, Madrid in 2005, he concedes that the surface is not his strongest, telling TennisX:
“I never like it a lot, playing in indoor, but that doesn’t mean that I cannot play well.
“If I am able to find the right feelings, seriously, I am not scared about playing indoors. It is a surface that I can play well.”
Nadal has come close to the title however, losing to Roger Federer in the final in 2010. But this year, he is fitter, stronger and even more determined. Whilst hard court specialist and reigning champion Novak Djokovic is justifiably the tournament favourite at 11/10, the value seems to be with the current world number one, Rafael Nadal, who is 9/4 to win.
With Andy Murray pulling out of the tournament as he recovers from a back problem, this may well be Nadal’s best opportunity to get his hands on the trophy.
Roger Federer is, for the first time in his career, an outsider to win this event. But at 7/1 there is great value to be had for a player who has taken home the title twice in four years. Federer has only made one final this year, losing to Del Potro in Basel, but the round-robin format could prove to be a welcome change for the former world number one.
