Money comes in for former boss Dowie to make Palace return

The latest name to be linked with the vacant Selhurst Park hotseat is their former manager Iain Dowie, who has shot towards the top of the betting with Ladbrokes.

Dowie may have been out of a job since leaving Hull in 2010, but that hasn’t put off punters from backing him to make a Selhurst comeback at 11/4, behind current Dynamo Moscow manager and ex-Chelsea right-back Dan Petrescu at 6/4.

The occasional TV pundit’s last job was an ill-fated stint as Hull City’s first and only ‘Football Management Consultant’ where he was brought in to try and keep the Tigers in the Premier League in the wake of Phil Brown’s enforced gardening leave after his infamous on-pitch team talk.

However, Dowie’s failure to guide Hull to safety from their last nine games saw him leave the Humberside club.

Now in talks with Palace though, his close links to the club have appeared to have curried favour with Steve Parish and the board.

In his previous stint as manager of the Croydon-based outfit, it’s fair to say Dowie had mixed success.

He was responsible for gaining the Eagles promotion to the Premier League via the 2003/04 play-offs, but then narrowly failed to keep them in the top-flight the following season.

An acrimonious split saw Dowie leave through mutual consent when losing out in the Championship play-off semis at the end of the proceeding season, where he eventually ended up in court with the then-owner of the club Simon Jordan.

Whether or not Palace fans would be over enamoured with Dowie’s appointment remains to be seen, while Petrescu remains a fascinating choice should he get the gig, given his successful spell as a Chelsea player back in the mid to late 90s.
