Mexes sunbed shame suggests Milan’s chances in Europe may cool
Published:Despite a crucial away win against Celtic in the Champions League, AC Milan will be wary of a final group game with Ajax as the club continues to lurch from one disaster to the next off the pitch.
This week was no different, with Tuttosport reporting that Diavolo defender Philippe Mexes is currently out of action after suffering a sunbed-related eye injury.
According to the news provider, the Frenchman reported feeling discomfort in his left eye, with his condition believed to be as a direct result of spending an extended amount of time exposed to the kind of ultraviolet lights used in cosmetic tanning machines.
However the only sensation the 31-year-old will be left feeling if Milan fail to reach the last-16 is pain, with the Rossoneri’s qualification from Group H still in the balance.
The Bhoys may have been vanquished with relative ease but Frank de Boer’s team will be an entirely different prospect, after the Amsterdam side demonstrated their football ability with a commanding 2-1 win over Barcelona – the team that trounced Massimiliano Allegri’s charges a few weeks back.
Milan remain the overriding favourites to qualify at 1/7 with Ladbrokes, but given the ongoing turmoil surrounding the Italians, you would be forgiven for opting to back Ajax at the much more attractive price of 4/1.
After all, the Amsterdam club went close to claiming a win over Milan earlier in the campaign, scoring what they thought was the winner late on only for Mario Balotelli to convert another last-gasp penalty at the other end.
Despite failing to the secure the win, the result saw Ajax extend their unbeaten run over their rivals to three games and there is every reason to suggest that form can continue against a team that has won just four times all season.
The Dutch giants will have particularly fond memories of their last trip to the San Siro back in 2010 in a game that saw the Amsterdamers leave with a commendable 2-0 win.
Repeat that result and Mexes and Milan could be left feeling the heat for an altogether different reason.
