McCoy’s next target after reaching 4,000 is Lester Piggott’s record

Lester Piggott is perhaps the best jockey of all time, with 4,493 career winners and an unprecedented nine victories in the Epsom Derby.

Tony McCoy may be in the National Hunt game rather than being a Flat jockey, but surpassing Piggott’s tally would still mark a formidable achievement.

Now that the 4,000 winners mark has now been realised thanks to Mountain Tunes’ victory at Towcester, McCoy can set this as his next target and the big question is how many triumphs he will eventually register in his career?

It is 7/4 that McCoy falls short of the 4,500 barrier, 6/4 that he achieves between 4500 and 4749, 7/2 that his final tally is between 4750 and 4999 and 6/1 that he goes on to surpass 5,000.

His seasonal winners count has marginally dropped in recent years, as after riding at least 200 in six of the eight years between 1998 and 2005, he has done the same just once since.

However, he has claimed at least 185 in each of the last five campaigns and he is already over 100 for the current season, ensuring McCoy is well on the way to being crowned champion jockey for the 19th consecutive year.

For this season, the price is 2/1 that McCoy rides less than 195 winners, 5/4 his count is between 195 and 205 and 2/1 that he goes beyond 205.

One of the other major questions that McCoy has to answer is what has been his best ever ride. Winning a sole Grand National on Don’t Push It in 2010 after 14 failed attempts will surely be the most pleasing, although his 2009 Cheltenham Festival triumph on Wichita Lineman will be widely remembered as his best.
