Ladbrokes are Keane for Lily Allen as Christmas number One

Published:

Lily Allen could well deliver the final nail in the X Factor coffin this December, with the cockney singer backed to beat Simon Cowell’s reality TV behemoth to the much-coveted Christmas number one spot.

The 28-year-old is the odds on 1/2 favourite with Ladbrokes to reach the top of the festive charts this year with her cover of Keane’s piano-pop classic “Somewhere Only We Know”, which features on the annual blockbuster Christmas advert from John Lewis.

Already tipped to smash the company’s YouTube views record, which stands at over half a million set back in 2011, the success of the track could mark the beginning of the end for Cowell & co.

For years the X Factor dominated the festive countdown  as music lovers far and wide were forced to see in the Christmas holiday with horror covers like Alexandra Burke’s “Hallelujah”.

But in recent times the public has fought back, with 2009’s chart-topping success for Rage against the Machine’s expletive-filled “Killing In The Name” signalling a clear shift within the public consciousness.

And with this year’s X Factor proving less popular than previous editions, the knives could be out yet again for hopefuls  Sam Bailey and Tamera Foster, who are both available at 5/1, while Nicholas McDonald can be backed at 6/1  to reach the chart summit.

In fact, the biggest contender to Allen’s pursuit of a third solo number one could be a duet by a deceased rock’n’roll icon and a little lady from West Lothian.

Susan Boyle’s new single sees the 52-year-old team up with Elvis for a rendition of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” to raise money for the Save the Children charity.

The Scot is on at 9/2 to be top of the charts come December 25th and having emerged from Britain’s Got Talent in 2009, her success will prove bittersweet for Cowell, who could yet be in for a not so merry Christmas this year.
