Kruse best bet outside Lewandowski to be top Bundesliga scorer

Borussia Dortmund’s goal-getter in chief Robert Lewandowski heads the current standings in the race to be the Bundesliga’s top goalscorer, but there are a whole host of other hotshots hanging off his coattails.

Nine Bundesliga goals from 12 Dortmund appearances have put Polish international Lewandowski just ahead in this contest, helping to mark him out as the 2/1 favourite to remain top of the goal-scoring charts at the end of the season.

Having scored 24 league goals for Dortmund last season and now being firmly established as one of the very best strikers in world football, it’s hardly surprising to see Lewandowski so short to scoop the accolade.

Only Bayer Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling scored more than Lewandowski in the Bundesliga last term when bagging himself a quarter-century and his seven so far for Sami Hyypia’s high-flyers make his odds of 7/1 particularly tasty.

However, there are some odds in the mix which are beginning to look as attractive as a Bratwurst smothered in mustard and washed down with a fine stein of Pilsener. Apologies to vegetarians.

Also on seven goals at present is Monchengladbach’s number 10, Max Kruse at 16/1, who is a sumptuous price and though the 25-year-old may have only notched 11 goals for former club Freiburg last season, he is at free-scoring Gladbach.

After a dodgy start, fourth-place Monchengladbach have won four of their last five – including victory over Dortmund – and have actually racked up more goals as a team than even Bayern Munich have so far.

On the subject of Bayern, Mario Mandzukic (5/1) remains the Bavarian’s top candidate on eight goals to date, though he fell 10 short of Kiessling’s total last season.
